School-Based Behavioral Health Services | Alex

Alex* began receiving school-based behavioral health services through PACES in seventh grade. He was struggling with ADHD, anger, and feeling alone after being bullied at school.

His case manager introduced him to the STAR method — Stop, Think, Act, and Review. This simple tool gave Alex a way to pause, think about his choices, and handle difficult situations in a healthier way.

With support from PACES, Alex learned positive coping skills that helped him manage his emotions and make better choices. Over time, he became more confident and began to focus less on the challenges he was facing and more on what he wanted for his future.

The Impact of School-Based Behavioral Health Services

By high school, Alex’s hard work was paying off. The skills he learned helped him take on new responsibilities and work toward his goals.

Alex got his first job in 10th grade and worked hard to save enough money to buy his own car. He even saved enough to pay for a senior trip to Paris. These accomplishments showed how much Alex had grown and how committed he was to becoming more independent.

Alex also started planning for life after high school. While still in school, he attended a local community college and earned a certificate in auto mechanics. The experience gave him hands-on skills and helped him take steps toward a future career.

Building a Future

Alex’s story shows how school-based behavioral health services can give students the tools and support they need to overcome challenges and reach their goals. The skills he learned through PACES helped him build confidence, make positive choices, and prepare for greater independence.

From learning how to handle difficult moments in seventh grade to earning a career certificate in high school, Alex has continued to grow and look toward his future.

With the right support, students can discover their strengths, build new skills, and create a future they are proud of.
